To Cloud or Not to Cloud!
At a recent gathering of entrepreneurs the speaker introduced the concept of “Cloud Storage” and it was interesting listening to the concerns raised by attendees with security being the main topic of discussion and flexibility being the second.
Interestingly, the speaker asked the gathering how many people backed up their data to an external hard drive and then left the hard drive next to their computer. The majority of the room agreed that this was something they tended to do more regularly than wisdom dictated should be the safe methodology!
Looking at the number of people that had “lost data” due to misplacing a USB or because of a virus and we wonder why it is always such a mission to change behaviour. The conversations being held clearly led to cloud storage being a “no brainer decision”. And yet it wasn’t!
Surprisingly, cost was the least reason for the lack of action from the gathering, it was all about a fundamental change from the norm to something that people could not see or touch. People were more comfortable with backing up to something that they could physically “own” rather than trusting something that they could not observe, or appear to manage for themselves.
Taking personal responsibility for something – even though the risks were greater – was a preferred status. Remarkably it will be within a year that we look at our “old” storage method and wonder why it took us so long to change to cloud!
How comfortable are you with your current method of storing data?
