Networking: Make the first move

Networking: Make the first move

Networking is an effective business strategy.
Deliah Soares, a young independent consultant from Brazil, often walks up to the President of the organising committee after a meeting. She introduces herself and thanks the President for the invitation. When there is an opportunity she asks whether the President could indicate participants that might connect well to her business. Her secret? ‘Smile, smile, smile.’ And be modest. Deliah: ‘I try not to be pushy. I rather ask politely for ‘expert advice’.’

Networking is about creating relations with the right people. You will only be connected if you make those connections… and many of them. So, step out. Make the first move, like Deliah. You can do it anywhere. Even at a birthday party. Don’t ‘work the room but choose two or three people with good vibes. Show sincere interest. Listen rather than talk. If you talk, try not to speak business. Be clear what it is you need but moreover what you can offer. Be a giver first before asking for help for yourself. How do you become a giver? How about connecting your new contact to other people you know?
Helping others is the key to successful networking. People don’t do business with businesses but they do business with people. Preferably people who are reliable and helpful.

What is your golden networking tip? Or do you think that networking is a waste of your valuable time?
