Millennials – hiring them is good business
Millennials (also known as Generation Y) are people born between 1980 and the mid-2000s and they make up the largest, most diverse generation. According to the Harvard Business Review, they are poised to “make up 50% of our workforce in the next four years,” so let’s explore why you need to start hiring this up-and-coming generation.
They’re educated
More Millennials have a college degree than any other generation of young adults. Even more significantly, Millennials are the first generation to have had access to the internet during their formative years so they are well-suited and adaptable to rapidly-changing technological trends that influence businesses in many industries.
They’re team players
According to Recruiter.com, Millennials are team players in the workplace with a heightened sense of community and relationships. Perhaps the social-media revolution has fostered a sense of interconnection for this inclusive generation that extends to their jobs.
They’re loyal
Millennials stay with their employers longer than Generation X (people born between the early 1960s and mid-1970s) workers did at the same ages. This may be because Millennials face a tougher labour market, with fewer opportunities. When you hire a Millennial, they are more likely to stay if you give them the chance to prove themselves.
They value things other than salary
Millennials appear to be less motivated by money, and more energised by finding work/life balance and flexibility. Research by Forbes found that one in three Millennials said they would prioritise social-media freedom, device flexibility and work mobility over salary in accepting a job offer.
They’re healthy
Millennials care about their health and wellbeing. They are more likely to be regular visitors to the gym and to have a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Conservation is instinctive
Millennials seem unconcerned about environmental matters, but this may be because they consider being eco-friendly is more second nature than it is activism. So it is likely that with more Millennials in your workplace, your company will recycle more and save energy and water.
Millennials are tech savvy, efficient and ready to solve the problems that your business faces. By understanding their values and motivations, you can leverage them to your advantage.
