Defrag for Mental Stimulation

Defrag for Mental Stimulation

We rarely talk about “defragging” any more but at one time it was seen as a necessary function to clean up our computer and make it work faster. So what if we spent a regular amount of time defragging our lives? What if we got rid of the clutter? Would we feel better and function more efficiently?

Every year we “archive” the previous years accounts, personal bills and business paperwork, but there are always things left over that we are not sure what to do with so we hoard them just in case.

This need to keep, instead of discard, can lead to our businesses being physically cluttered with everything from redundant computer hardware – because the hard drive might contain something we might need later – to paperwork that has no relevance and is just taking up space. It can also result in us clinging on to old ideas that push our businesses backwards instead of enabling forward momentum that keeps us relevant.

Those that embark on regular cleansing activities, that throw away to unbundle, who clear out their cupboards, at work and at home, express a feeling of relief and renewed energy when the process is complete. They find that they are energised and ready to tackle new adventures because they are faced with a new “chapter”, and it is exciting and stimulating.

We have a natural tendency to cling on to the old and established routines, to surround ourselves with familiar things and to gain comfort from knowing that we have a potential solution for every eventuality within the collection of information or goods we have acquired and stored. When we clear out we leave space for the new and this keeps our minds focused and our businesses full of revitalised thought processes and opportunities.

When did you last “defrag” you life and your business?
